Illuminating Intentions: An Introduction to Candle Magic

As many of you know, my journey has included a deep struggle with mental health and people-pleasing tendencies. I grew up navigating a family dynamic shaped by narcissists and their people pleasers. I was constantly trying to bridge the gap between two opposing camps. This exhausting pattern left me in an unsustainable relationship with my work. The universe, in its infinite wisdom, forced me to break up with "Workaholic Erin". Shortly after I gave notice to leave my position as an educator, I was gifted my first tarot deck. Not long after that, I purchased my first intention candle. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I instinctively lit the candle at my desk, staring into space as the flame danced. That small act sparked a journey I never could have imagined...one that allowed me to transformed my life through the magic of intention and fire.

The Spark of Candle Magic: What It Is and Why It Works

Candle magic is just such an accessible tool for anyone seeking self-connection, manifestation, or spiritual growth. The essence of candle magic lies in its simplicity and profound symbolism: a single flame representing your intentions, fueled by your energy and focus. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or just starting, candle magic offers a transformative practice steeped in history and practicality.

A Tradition Rooted in Simplicity

If you really think about it, candle magic is in our bones as early as the first time we blow out the candles on our birthday cakes. That small ritual contains the same essence as lighting a candle with intention. The simplicity is the strength of candle magic... watch the next time a child makes a wish. You will see them intuitively ground, visualize and connect to their wish...to their intention. It’s not about elaborate but it is amazing.

The Power of Fire and Focus

Fire being the guiding symbol of transformation, energy, and focus. When we light our candles, the flame becomes a bridge between our intentions and their manifestation. Fire consumes, purifies, and energizes, making it a catalyst for change in both the physical and metaphysical realms.

Choosing the Right Candle for Your Intentions

Selecting the perfect candle is like choosing a a friend to be present for your journey...it’s an essential and deeply personal choice in your practice. Each candle color holds its own energy and symbolism, it is assigning a spiritual language to your goals. For me, the process begins with a check-in: I meditate, pull tarot cards, and engage in journaling or art-making to uncover which part of my life needs extra attention and intention. From there, I reflect on what grounded change I want to call in and craft a positive affirmation to anchor my energy. It’s a ritual of clarity, alignment, and trust, ensuring that the candle I choose is not just beautiful, but deeply purposeful.

Candle Colors and Their Meanings

Here’s a guide to candle colors and their correspondences:

Color

Meaning

Red

Sparks passion, vitality, and physical energy, grounding and promoting security.

Orange

Embodies creativity, joy, and emotional flow, supporting pleasure and self-expression.

Yellow

Radiates confidence, positivity, and willpower. Encourages personal power and focus.

Green

Offers growth, balance, and fresh perspectives. Fosters love, compassion, and harmony.

Blue

Encourages tranquility and open communication. Promotes authenticity and expression.

Purple

Inspires intuition, wisdom, and a deeper sense of purpose. Sharpens insight and spiritual vision.

White

Black

Represents protection, banishing negativity, and deep introspection. A grounding color for shadow work, uncovering hidden truths, resilience, and transformation.

For those just beginning, a white candle is a universal substitute, embodying purity and all-purpose energy, therefore if you are like me and you just want to be present with the flame to sort yourself out, I recommend white as a place to start. For my seasoned practitioners, I encourage choosing a candle after you have clarified your intentions, if you don' have the resources to keep an apothecary that's actually kinda great! Making the shopping experience part of the magic can be fun , choosing one candle to cherish throughout its life span is a far more magical experience than having candles and herbs laying around to lose your affection. I encourage you to reflect on what in your life needs tending to and set your intentions, then savor the experience of curating your rituals, creating a strong foundation for manifestations.

Preparing Your Candle for Ritual: Setting the Stage

We have covered that a very powerful candle ritual begins with intentional preparation and curation to transform the candle into a sacred vessel to communicate your intentions. Let’s explore the moments leading up to the practice, ensuring the candle becomes a true extension of your energy and purpose.

Dressing and Anointing Candles

While many practitioners enjoy dressing and anointing their candles with oils and herbs, I’ve designed the Alchemy and Art ceramic dishes with fire safety and energy enhancement in mind. For all practical purposes oils and herbs do burn at a more volatile rate than a beeswax candle creating an incredibly inconsistent burn. I discourage anointing candles due to the fact that I want to receive clear unfettered communication from my guides. With the carefully crafted composition of Alchemy and Art candle magic tools, any unstable burn can be received as clear communication from your spirit team, offering insight into the energies at play.

  • For those of you interested in fire divination, I’ve even written a ritual to help you interpret these messages should you choose to use an Elemental Circle.

  • For those of you who will continue to anoint your candles stay tuned... I will be publishing my herb and candle making process in blogs to come.

Infusing Intention Through Visualization or Reiki

Visualization is an important element of candle magic. As you hold the candle, picture your intention as vividly as possible. Imagine your goal already achieved, and let that energy flow into the candle. If you don't have access to visual processes in your minds eye write yourself a story to read or create a vision board to hold your gaze. I am a Level 3 Reiki Master, Teacher and I administer Reiki to candles and dishes at various points in my making process to ensure that I am offering my customers the highest quality products I am capable of.

Crafting Your Candle Ritual: Step-by-Step Guide

By now your goals and intentions have been clarified and your candle is chosen and you are ready to proceed.

Performing the Ritual

  1. Choose a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.

  2. Light your candle, holding space for your intention through any practice you choose...meditation on the flame, journaling, creating art or pulling a tarot card.

The Alchemy and Art meditation library is a great resource for guided meditations that support this process.

  3. Let the candle burn as long as safely possible, visualizing your intention coming to life.

  4. If you can’t let the candle burn completely, snuff it out respectfully (never blow it out) and relight it during your next ritual.

Safely Disposing of Ritual Remnants

When your ritual is complete, dispose of wax, herbs, or paper thoughtfully. Bury them in the earth to symbolize release, or keep them as a reminder of your intentions.

Exploring Advanced Practices: Candle Magic for Divination

Once you’re comfortable with the basics, candle magic can evolve into a tool for divination.

Reading the Flame

A flickering flame may indicate unstable energy, while a strong, steady flame reflects focus and alignment. Observing the flame’s behavior can offer insights into your ritual’s energy.

Wax Pattern Divination

Dripping wax into water reveals shapes and symbols, offering messages from your spirit team. I’ve seen symbols like hearts and spirals appear, guiding me toward love and transformation.

Embracing Candle Magic in Your Daily Life

Everyday Candle Magic Ideas

Incorporate candle magic into daily rituals here are a few of my go to's:

1) I light a candle and say each one of my great grandmother's full names (my grand mothers are still alive in 2025) as a prayer to stay connected through my generational healing practice. I know they did their part to get me started.

2) I light a candle during meditation or setting an intention while preparing for the day.

3) Some days I light a candle and choose jewlery or my pocket rocks to amplify their importance as touchstones to be intenitonal throughout the day.

The Connection Between Intention and Transformation

Candle Magic and my other practices have taught me the alignment and mission that is Alchemy and Art: using spiritual connectedness to help you reconnect with yourself through intentional living. Aligning your inner world with your outer actions, you create a life of authenticity and purpose.

Every person who raises their own vibration raises their perspective looking outward. When you raise up your own intentions, practices, identity and actions the worth of every living and non living thing raises as well. Our spirits all become visable. Raising the vibration of the individual really does raise the vibration of the collective...2 fold.
